Sēb's Recreation Center
On January 19, 2019, Sēb's Recreation Center celebrated its one-year anniversary. Sēbian's story continues to inspire and motivate people to want to help empower individuals with special needs and unique challenges. SRC is continuously adding new events and programs, gaining corporate sponsors and meeting new individuals, families and groups every week who come in to use the center. Sēb's Recreation Center is truly A PLACE WHERE EVERYONE IS ACCEPTED AND NO ONE IS LEFT OUT!
It wasn't long before Sēbian's newly-opened center was being recognized far beyond the local community. In February 2018, Chris Ulmer of Special Books By Special Kids would share Sēb's story with the world. His story aired on YouTube and Facebook, as well as the SBSK website. Sēbian's positive attitude, infectious personality and smile won the hearts of people from all over the world and the feedback he received through social media outlets was overwhelming.
For you my son...
Hello, my name is Keithan Holiday, and I am the president of Sēb’s Recreation Center (SRC). I am excited to introduce to you this unique facility that will strive to provide a safe, comfortable environment for the physically challenged to work out, attend classes, engage in informational seminars, relax, and have fun with their families, caregivers, and other participants.
As the father of a disabled son, we struggle to find activities, both physically and socially, where we both can participate at the same time and under the same roof. The dream of opening a recreational center for the disabled stems from my son going to work with me one day at a 'recreational center ' and not being able to do anything. He asked me, 'Dad, what can I do here?' I replied, 'Son, we can swim, but that's about it.' I could tell that Sēbian was upset and after some time had passed I asked him what was on his mind. He said, 'Dad it's not right that there is nothing here for me to do. We should open up a recreational center for people like me, the disabled.' My reply to him was, 'I think that is a great idea and I will do my best to make that happen. In trying to fulfill my son's wish, my goal is to provide high quality products and services in one convenient location for all to enjoy. The center will be supported by professionally trained and knowledgeable staff. We will aim to have personal relationships with our clients and customers that will last for years to come.
Please check back from time to time, as new information will become available regarding fundraising events that will be offered by SRC, as well as details about our upcoming location.
I thank you for taking the time to learn more about Sēb’s Recreation Center. If you are inspired by our vision for SRC and would like to help make the center a success, please do not hesitate to volunteer or make a contribution.
I encourage you to explore our website to learn more about specific services and programs that will be offered by SRC.
Thank you again for your interest in Sēb’s Recreation Center and look forward to serving you.
President of Sēb’s Recreation Center
On January 19, 2018, after almost 5 years of planning, Sēbian's vision became a reality when Sēb's Recreation Center opened its doors for business. SRC would now be able to fulfill their mission and provide a place for ALL to enjoy. On opening day, Sēbian shared his story on local television.
Empowering individuals with special needs and unique challenges
As the weeks progressed, Sēb's Recreation Center continued on with daily events and activities, while promoting the center throughout the local community. During this time, Sēbian's health began to decline. Although he was not able to be at the center, he was given continuous updates at home about the daily happenings at SRC.
On June 19, 2018, Sēbian was called Home at the age of 16 years old. While on this earth, he touched the lives of hundreds of people, including those who would never meet him face to face. They, along with family and friends who knew him best, expressed their love and condolences through phone calls, cards and social media posts.
Before his passing, Sēbian was nominated by Sisters Enterprise for a Random Acts Of Kindness award. His story about opening up a recreation center for the disabled community would be featured in a book titled These Are They, written by Elinora L. Reynolds and Betty A. FunderburkE. Sēbian passed before he was able to receive his award, however in a June 30th ceremony honoring all of the nominees for 2018, Sēb's family accepted the award on his behalf.
As viewers continued to inquire about Sēbian, Cody reached out to his family with a request to do a follow-up story. Shortly after the original broadcast, Cody would again share Sēbian's story, this time under different circumstances.
In June of 2013, Sēb's Recreation Center submitted its request to become a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. SRC's mission would be to help empower individuals with special needs and unique challenges. In September of 2015, that request was granted and the search for a permanent location began. By the summer of 2017, Sēbian's dream was becoming a reality when a building was secured. By November, the center was taking shape and Sēb's Recreation Center would soon be open.
Cody Broadway shared Sēbian's story in a 9News segment that aired on March 8, 2018. Feedback from viewers was tremendous, as the station received dozens of calls wanting to know more about Sēb and how they could help support his recreation center.
Despite Sēbian's setback, he maintained his positive attitude and continued to inspire people from all around the country. He received numerous prayers and overwhelming support during his hospital stay. When he was well enough to come home, Sēb thanked his supporters via Facebook for all of their encouragement.
For the next several weeks and months, Sēb's Recreation Center received cards, phone calls and visitors from the community expressing their deepest sympathy to Sēbian's family and friends. During this time of mourning, more people were starting to learn about SRC and the center began to get more visitors, gain new members and introduce new events and activities. Sēbian's legacy would continue on and his dream would be kept very much alive.
On November 17, 2018, Sēbian's 17th birthday, family and friends gathered at SRC to celebrate his life and all that he accomplished before he was called Home. Balloons were released in memory of a very special young man who had a vision and a dream to help others like himself.
Sēbian had a dream to open up a recreation center for people with disabilities, for people like himself...
